“He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.” (Proverbs 13:24)

This famous saying in the Proverbs was summarized in a poem by Samuel Butler in 1622: “Spare the rod and spoil the child.”

Expositor’s Commentary adds, “Parental love is displayed in disciplining the children responsibly… Too much lenience and too much harsh discipline are equally problematic. The balance comes when the child has room to grow while learning the limits.”
