“A gentle answer quiets anger, but a harsh one stirs it up,” (Proverbs 15:1, GNB).

How important is this principle in human relations! By avoiding saying just a few hurtful words during the day and by using kind words instead, the day can become a success instead of a failure.

Abigail, wife of Nabal, used this principle when addressing the future king, David (1 Samuel 25:1-44). Nabal, her unwise husband, had insulted David's men when, after defending Nabal's shepherds, they asked for provisions.

When David was ready to attack, Abigail met his forces with provisions and a humble attitude. The crisis was averted.
