“He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city,” (Proverbs 16:32, NKJV).

One of God’s fruits of the spirit is self-control - the ability to properly control one’s emotions and impulses - especially harnessing anger. Once, Peter the Great, the powerful Russian czar, lost his temper and struck his gardener. Hearing the man died a few days later, Peter cried out, "Alas! I have civilized my own subjects; I have conquered other nations; yet I have not been able to conquer or civilize myself!"

The pressures of social media and immediate gratification can encourage us to let our emotions and our anger control our thinking. Yet our emotions are one thing we can rule. This is one of the incredible things about how God created humans, with the unique spirit in man that makes us human and not merely animal. We have the power of choice and analytical thought, whereas the animal creation is predominatly directed by instinct and reaction.
