Letters From Our Readers

Readers of The Good News share their thoughts

"Australia: An Underappreciated Nation"

I appreciated the article "Australia: An Underappreciated Nation." I have long been blessed by the freedom and opportunity that exists here "down under" and it is good to be reminded that freedom is never free. Your article also brought to mind Luke 12:48: "To whom much is given, from him much will be required." It will be interesting to see if the upcoming generation of young Aussies realizes how much they have been given not only by God, but by many of their brothers who died for their sakes, and how much they are prepared to sacrifice to keep it.

Perhaps the outward-looking focus of Australia's war efforts is a reflection of the country itself. Aussies tend to look outward to our coastlines and beyond. If we look at ourselves historically, we end up looking to Europe. If we look at ourselves financially we see Asia and the United States. It seems wherever we look, it is outside of our own world, and that is, in part, why we Australians see ourselves as part of a world community.

"God, Science and the Bible"

Two thumbs-up on the addition of the new feature "God, Science and the Bible." This is an informative new section to an already excellent publication. The Good News and all of your other publications have taught me more about the Bible than I could have ever hoped to learn on my own.

The Good News

I want to thank you for your articles on "Winning the War Against the Family" and "Is America Still a Moral Nation?" Families are the building block of a healthy society, and thus healing begins with the family. If families begin to heal—truly becoming families as the Lord God wants them to be in the Bible—the whole nation will heal. And if the Ten Commandments were sincerely followed by the majority of the population, the entire nation would begin to heal.

The Good News is beautifully illustrated and the layout is excellent. In my estimation you have not only raised the bar to another level, but have sought to maintain the content and quality of the message contained in the magazine. Your articles are uncomplicated, straightforward and to the point—coming across with such clarity that they put the reader in a relaxed frame of mind, which makes it easier to retain the material.

I appreciate receiving The Good News. I am a Southern Baptist, but everything I read in your magazine certainly coincides with my beliefs. I appreciate the information you give about what's going on around the world. Of course, some will be critical of this magazine because it tells the truth.

I currently live in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and am writing to thank you for publishing such a wonderful magazine. The Good News is undoubtedly my favorite. This scripture-based publication stands for all the biblical principles and covers crucial topics in a terrific way. My prayer is that ten thousands of people will be reached by The Good News.

The importance of biblical doctrine

The Good News that you so graciously make available free to thousands around the world is a very encouraging and informative magazine to Christians and their families. So permit me to strongly suggest that you would, if possible, leave out all doctrinal issues from future publications, and stick to family issues and informing readers of world events that pertain to God's prophetic Word.

Proper biblical doctrine is the bulwark of true Christianity and makes it distinctive and effective. Without it, even the true Church would soon drift into error and confusion. The apostle Paul told Timothy that all Scripture was profitable for doctrine (2 Timothy 3:16) and instructed him to "give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine" (1 Timothy 4:13). Please read the next two letters and see the effects of true biblical doctrines on people's lives.

A little over a year ago I found one of your booklets and read it with some amazement, at first thinking some of the information had to be wrong (i.e., about Christmas, Easter and what happens after death, etc.). So I started studying what the booklets put forth and time after time found that they were right. For the past year I have requested many booklets and found that what they put forth is completely supported by the Bible and historical/archaeological proofs.

Having been raised and educated in another church, I had always felt that something was missing. My reading and studying due to the Church's booklets has resulted in my having met a great pastor of your congregations here. In addition, I have also had the great privilege and joy of visiting with a local Church couple. It has also resulted in my current preparation and mentoring for baptism.

Thank you for helping me understand the Bible more than I could ever imagine. I always pray to God for wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Now that I look back, I see He has answered my prayers. I say this because He brought you into my life to understand more about what I read. Then, God turns and blesses me with knowledge of His Word.

Honestly, if it were not for you, I probably would still be wondering if God was real. My church has good people in it. However, your teachings are different in lots of ways. We do communion every fourth Sunday and since last year I am reluctant to participate not only in that, but Easter as well. I also feel the same way about Christmas and all the other pagan holidays. When I am asked to come to the pulpit and say something, I want so badly to speak on things that I have learned from the United Church of God.

L.H., Internet

We are glad to hear of your remarkable progress in looking to God and His Word for true knowledge and understanding. You mentioned communion every fourth Sunday. Our free booklet God's Holy Day Plan: The Promise of Hope for All Mankind addresses this issue in an early chapter. Please let us know if we may be of further help.
