Letters from Our Readers

Readers of The Good News share their thoughts.

"The Pope: Other Christian Faiths Defective"

I read with interest the article on page 12 of the September-October Good News, "The Pope: Other Christian Faiths Defective." It is the same type of statement given out by the Roman church recently. A lot of the doctrines that are formulated by Rome are not found in the teachings of the early Church and are not found in the Bible. I think it is about time that the Roman church got its own house in order before implying that other Christian doctrines are not valid.

-R.C., Portsmouth, England

I thought the [Good News] magazine was good, but I am Catholic. My beliefs do not coincide with all that is written in your magazine. I realized this after reading one of the articles about Easter. I discussed the article with my pastor and he said it did not go along with our Catholic beliefs. Therefore, I think that spreading the Word of God (as your magazine does) is great for those who don't know God. But I do believe in Jesus Christ. Therefore, so as not to confuse anyone in my household, we will just receive other literature that goes along with our beliefs.

-L.B., Lexington, Texas

We also believe in Jesus Christ. He had to address why His doctrine did not coincide with the beliefs of various religious groups of His day. For example, the Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection and thought they could stump Him with a question about it (Matthew 22:23-28). Jesus pointed out that the Scriptures themselves should be the source of our beliefs, not humanly devised teaching or tradition. He said to them: "You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God" (verse 29; compare Matthew 4:4).

Both Peter and Paul obtained their beliefs directly from the teachings of Jesus and from the Scriptures (2 Peter 1:20-21; 2 Timothy 3:15-17). We encourage our readers not to simply accept what we say, but to follow the example of the Bereans, who "searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so" (Acts 17:11). Don't believe what we or others say the Bible teaches-read it yourself and believe what the Bible itself says.

Booklets help our readers

Thank you for sending me your booklets andI don't know who wrote them, but they are the most clearly informative publications I have read in a long, long time. I am enclosing a small check to you to aid in sending more booklets to me and others. I know that you have always sent these freely to anyone who might request them, but your work is so important to the whole world.

-E.R., Glendale, Arizona

I read the booklet titled Who Is God? at a time when I was getting really confused because I was hearing so many things (monotheism, Mormonism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam) and I didn't know what was the truth. I read your booklet and I cried! Something just felt right and I can't explain it.

-Reader, New Zealand

I'd like to thank the United Church of God and all the authors who contributed to Making Life Work. I reside in the East Coast area of North America. There are great human relationship and employment problems here. Making Life Work takes readers step-by-step to successfully deal with the trying times of life. Each person must be willing to walk with God through each situation. Without His presence we will come to [faulty] human solutions. Your booklet helped me to seek out God's help for these trying times.

-Reader, Internet

Please send me and . Thank you for sending me-an excellent book that answered so many questions and my reason for requesting the above two booklets.

Which day is the Sabbath?

I'm a science teacher (biology and chemistry). After reading many issues of The Good News, I was shocked to find out that I have followed ungodly practices. Now my main worry is which day one has to observe based on the Fourth Commandment?

-K.S., Internet

As our free booklet explains, the Bible instructs us to observe the weekly Sabbath from sunset Friday evening to sunset Saturday evening.

The way to peace for Israel?

Surely the way to peace in the world is by discussion and dialogue, not death and destruction. Israel would achieve this by engaging with the Palestinians and giving up its nuclear weapons. America should become less pro-Israel in its foreign policy.

-J.H.G., Isle of Man

Please read the World News and Trends feature about Israel on page 10 and the second question and answer on page 29 of this issue.

Readers in the army

I am greatly appreciative of the work you have done. It is an awesome feeling to see others bring forth the reality of Scripture in context. I just wanted to tell you to keep up the good work!

-R.S., U.S. Army

Thank you for posting sermons on the Internet. I am currently stationed in Iraq. Your Web site is great and wonderful, a source to help me understand the situation and the country I'm in. Please keep all of us soldiers in your prayers.

Bible Study Course

I wish to express my heartfelt thanks for exposing me to such a wonderful course. Actually nothing is so rewarding in this world as studying the Word of God. The study manuals are so powerful that one can't stop glancing through them each passing day. What is more, your wonderful literature received so far has actually reshaped my life through the Holy Spirit. I have built a wonderful library with the booklets received so far. May the good Lord richly bless you.

Finding the right Church

I came across your Web site and I just love it. I've gotten more answers to questions from your Web site than from anywhere else. I've been looking for 56 years. I've always been skeptical toward churches. They just didn't feel right in their beliefs and teachings. My question is: Is there a true Church here in Sioux Falls, South Dakota? What is the name of the Church? You can respond back to me by e-mail.

-G.T., Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Yes, we have a congregation in Sioux Falls and we have sent you the telephone number of our pastor. In the meantime, you may wish to request our two free booklets and .
