Make the Most of Life!

by David Treybig

"It doesn't get any better than this." So intoned an often-run television commercial about guys getting together in the outdoors and enjoying an alcoholic beverage. The company sponsoring the ad was appealing to the desire that we humans have for fun—all with the hope that it would cause more people to buy their product.

hot air ballonsIn this issue of Youth United, we don't have any beverages for sale. But we do have something far more valuable to offer. This issue focuses on information that can help young people, both guys and girls, have better lives in many ways.

We begin with the obvious—a young person can't have a good life unless he or she has life. Unfortunately, school shootings are becoming commonplace and young people need to know when to relate sensitive information to authorities in order to save their lives and those of their classmates. The article "To Narc or Not to Narc?" addresses this important issue.

Closely related to safety at school is the need for a positive self-image. In spite of living in a society with unprecedented wealth and opportunity, teenage suicides are increasing. Janet Treadway, in her article "Born to Succeed!," explains how young people can gain the right perspective and help others who are discouraged. Another article, "Prepare for a Long, Healthy Life," rounds out the physical side of life. In this piece, Greg Sargent reveals the distressing statistics showing poorer health among young people and what we can do to reverse the trend.

Next, we turn our attention to something everyone enjoys—fun! First, a group of young adults shares some biblical perspectives about defining this important subject in their article, "What Is Fun?"While opinions about fun vary from individual to individual, what we really need to know is God's opinion. As the authors explain, the kind of fun God has in mind for us is the kind of fun that is also going to be best for us in the long run.

When it comes to entertainment, what young person wouldn't list music and movies as some of his or her favorite pleasures? In his article, "Choosing Music and Movies," Larry Greider addresses the commercial impact teens make in these areas and how young people can make good decisions in what they hear and view.

Looking at the bigger picture of what you will do with your life, Ken Treybig continues with part 3 of his series on "Planning for Life." If you want to read a real-life example of a young person who has been applying biblical principles in her life, read Karie Greider's story, "Here's to New Adventures."

Wrapping up this issue is our regular feature on questions and answers from young people themselves. If you have questions about how to have a better life by living according to God's instructions, please send them in. We'll give you a personal e-mail answer. If we use your question in our "Ask Youth" feature, you can also be assured that your privacy will be maintained.

As I mentioned earlier, we have nothing to sell. But we do have some important advice to share. Living our lives according to God's instructions is always the best way to go. 1 Timothy 4:8 says, "...godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come." Why not make the most of your life, God's way? YU
