Researchers explore a connection between excessive cell phone use and grade point average.
A Kent State University, in Ohio, study finds a correlation between higher cell phone use, lower grades and greater unhappiness (or increased anxiety) among college students.
The study surveyed 500 students about their cell phone usage and satisfaction with their lives and then, after receiving permission to view school records, compared those findings to each respondent’s grade point average.
Experts acknowledged that these findings were not conclusive, but recommended that students monitor their use of smartphones and cell phones in order to keep a balanced academic life (Catharine Paddock PhD, “Cell Phone Use Linked to Lower College Grades, Anxiety,” MedicalNewsToday.com, December 9, 2013).
“You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image… you shall not bow down to them nor serve them,” (Exodus 20:3-4).
Cell phones and smartphones should serve us. We shouldn’t serve them.
Just like we might run a program to scan for a virus on a computer, it's always a good idea to run a scan on our lives in order to see if we’re putting anything before God. When we find the offending object or habit, reduce or remove it.
Since we can’t just toss our cell phones out; take the opportunity to go “device-free” from time to time. Appreciate God’s beautiful creation and reconnect with Him through prayer and Bible study.
