EU Pressures Poland and the Czech RepublicAccording to The Times, "Fears that Eastern European countries are preparing to follow Ireland's rejection of the Lisbon treaty have increased tensions ... The Continent's leaders are refusing to accept that the treaty is dead, despite the dramatic Irish referendum rejection last week, and are determined to persuade the Czechs and the Poles, seen as the two [EU countries] most likely to suspend ratification, to complete the process" (June 19, 2008). The Lisbon Treaty has been passed by the Polish parliament, but President Kaczynski may well decide to withhold his required signature until he sees how the Irish Republic will react to increasing EU pressure. A constitutional court challenge has taken place in the Czech Republic. Although President Klaus has gone so far as to declare the Lisbon Treaty dead, the Czech government as a whole hasn't yet given a clear statement of what it may decide. Large nations (or combines of countries) know how to put economic and political pressures on smaller ones. At the present time resistance is still possible, but when these biblical prophecies about the end-time alignment of nations begin to be fulfilled, smaller nations will be hard-pressed to have a say in their individual destinies. |
