According to a column in The National Interest: "Kim Darroch, the British ambassador to the United States, recently told a Washington think tank that Britain will send aircraft carriers to the Pacific once they become operational in the 2020s. Four Royal Air Force Typhoon fighters, which arrived in Japan in October for joint exercises, are scheduled to fly over the South China Sea ... Naturally, Beijing warned that these moves could threaten relations between China and Britain" (Michael Peck, "Is Great Britain Preparing for a War With China?" Jan. 7, 2017).
Is potential armed conflict between China and the West an impossibility? Apparently not to Chinese officials: "China is preparing for a potential military clash with the United States, according to an article on the Chinese army's website. 'The possibility of war increases' as tensions around North Korea and the South China Sea heat up, Liu Guoshun, a member of the national defense mobilization unit of China's Central Military Commission, wrote on Jan. 20 -- the same day as President Donald Trump's inauguration" (Evelyn Cheng, "US-China War Increasingly a 'Reality,' Chinese Army Official Says," CNBC, Jan 29, 2017).
A U.S.-China war is a terrifying prospect for the entire world, as both nations are nuclear powers with large armies and navies. Collateral damage to other nations would be unavoidable, making any potential conflict a global concern.
For a Christian, concern over the fates of our nations today should inspire us to greater yearning for the coming of God's Kingdom in all its fullness. Jesus' reign on earth will be marked by all nations coming to learn peace instead of war -- a far cry from our world as it is today. (Sources: The National Interest, CNBC.)
