"But They Feared God" (What Greatness Is)

article by Todd Carey

Consider the story of two women who became great because of their obedience to God.

Shiphrah and Puah helped extend the nation of Israel by refusing to obey the evil command of the king of Egypt. "But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive" (Exodus 1:17).

Rather than look good in the eyes of Pharaoh, these women obeyed God, knowing it could have cost them their lives.

What was the end result? Greatness. God remembered them and raised them to a level of greatness. "Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very mighty. And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them" (Exodus 1:20-21).

God lifted these women up and rewarded them. Perhaps they are not great by worldly standards, but they are great in God's eyes because they went into the trenches and served without trying to advance themselves. UN
