Psalm Reading Program

Introductory Letter

INSD Churches January 1, 2012

Dear Brethren,

Enormous benefits come from reading the Psalms! They are the words and thoughts of God Himself teaching us how to worship Him! Since God told Moses and the Israelites not to copy the worship of other Gods in worshipping Him (Exodus 20:2-7; Deuteronomy 12:30-32), He would naturally tell us how TO worship Him! The Book of Psalms is a large part of that answer, being the national book of worship of God’s people in ancient times and presently.

This program is a plan to make it easier to read through all 150 Psalms while making them more understandable. It is organized around a week of five daily readings (Monday through Friday) with a break over the weekend. The psychological benefit of having a weekly break can help a person stick to the plan and readings without falling behind.

Comments are provided to enhance the understanding and use of each Psalm as a personal prayer guide. These “program notes” are brief to encourage reading rather than a thorough study. The object is to make each Psalm more individual and recognizable. The Psalms can be overwhelming because there are so many of them. Also, they are poetry and are similar in subject and approach. But when you focus on their differences and unique messages, it is much easier to understand and absorb the inspiration and edification from this book of worship that God has put into it.

This is such an important study because it enhances spiritual growth for those who treat it like treasure and seek the spiritual nuggets and priceless jewels of truth that are there for the taking (Proverbs 2:1-5). The thoughts, the meditations, the dialog or spiritual conversation between the Father and His children is recorded in these prayers. If we would draw close to God, come to know Him intimately and grow spiritually, we would certainly read the Psalms.

I strongly encourage you to take the small amount of time necessary five days out of each week to read and pray your way through the Psalms!

With best wishes for your success and edification!

Mitchell Knapp
