An Israeli archaeologist, Eli Shukron, believes he has identified the citadel that King David captured from the Jebusites. Also called the Citadel of Zion and the Spring Citadel, the location is in east Jerusalem and has been opened as a tourist exhibit with interpretive materials and videos.
The massive fortifications surround a spring with a shaft that diverts water to a pool, thought to be the water source for the Jebusite city. It was through such a shaft that David was able to penetrate the citadel. The story is recounted in 2 Samuel 5:6-9.
However, other archaeologists disagree on the identification of the site and believe more research is necessary before drawing final conclusions (“Israeli Archaeologist Says He’s Found Citadel Captured By King David,” Associated Press at FoxNews.com, May 6, 2014).
Future history
Despite the archaeological disputes, a few things are certain. There was a city that King David conquered, that is Jebus, now known as Jerusalem. There is undoubtedly a site through which he conquered the city.
Most importantly, Jerusalem is not just an ancient city with some interesting history, it will be the site of world shaking events yet to come. God keeps his eye on what occurs there, and when the time is right Jesus Christ will return and rule the world from Jerusalem.
