A good laugh can help lower levels of cortisol, researchers find.
Laughter has long been called “the best medicine” and a recent study has once again shown how true that statement is. Researchers from Loma Linda University in California showed a humorous video to test groups and found that laughter helps to lessen the detrimental impact of the stress hormone cortisol.
Cortisol contributes to decreased memory function, high blood pressure, and diabetes. After the twenty minute video test groups showed improved memory and decreased cortisol in the body (Mark Prigg, “Laughing Puts the Brain Into A 'True Meditative State’ AND Can Improve Your Memory, Researchers Claim,” The Daily Mail at DailyMail.co.uk, April 28, 2014).
Proverbs 17:22 outlines the basic principle behind this research, “A merry heart does good like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones,” (NKJV). God inspired this wise advice to be included in the Bible for our good. Take time to lighten your mood, enjoy a good, clean laugh and share a positive outlook with others.
