Is smoking bad for you? The resounding answer is, “Yes!” A fact well documented over the past few decades. There are more than 30 illnesses and diseases directly related to, or greatly exacerbated by smoking. Now added to the list of bad health effects of smoking is macular degeneration.

In a study in the British Medical Journal, research is showing that cigarette smoking significantly increases the risk of age-related vision loss. This vision loss can range from loss of peripheral vision to complete blindness. As with most other health risks associated with smoking, the chances of developing a disease or smoking related illness decreases dramatically when an individual stops smoking (“Smoking Could Ruin Your Eyesight,” The BBC at News.BBC.co.uk, March 5, 2014).

The Creator expects…

King David, the psalmist and man after God’s heart, was inspired to offer some insight into God’s role in the creation of the human body:

“For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well,” (Psalm 139:13-14, NKJV).

In an increasingly secular society, is becomes easy to convince ourselves that we are our own and are not obliged to obey anyone, let alone an all-powerful Creator. Even with regard to our physical bodies, we may not appreciate them and how they were created, but they are a gift from God and we owe it to Him to take care of them to the best of our ability. Not smoking, or quitting if you have already begun, is a good place to start.
