Despite seeming to be the answer to the quest for clean energy, it turns out that wind farms with their giant looming turbines actually contribute to raising temperatures.
Satellite data from large wind farms in Texas reveals that because of the tall turbines mixing rising warmer air with colder air near the ground at night, the ground is not cooled as much overnight-thus creating higher temperatures in the local area. The temperature variation could affect local wildlife as well as regional weather patterns. With many turbines going up in various places around the world every day, the long-term implications are being researched by experts, although there is debate about what the actual impact will be (Louise Gray, "Wind Farms Can Cause Climate Change, Finds New Study," Telegraph.co.uk, April 29, 2012).
