Recent research by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology finds that even when sight is absent, the part of the brain that processes visual information is still active, proving the brain is more flexible than previously understood.
Likewise, parts of the brain that normally control specific functions, like sight, can be repurposed as the brain rewires itself after injury or illness.
When blind individuals who participated in a study were tested, researchers discovered that as braille, the system of raised dots on paper representing the written alphabet, was being read with fingers, the brain’s visual cortex was active. Blind participants’ visual cortices were also active in ear-focused listening sessions involving complex grammatical patterns and sentences (Brandon Keim, "Sight Gets Repurposed in Brains of the Blind," WiredScience.com, March 1, 2011).
"Fearfully and wonderfully made" is how the Bible describes the human body (Psalms 139:14).
