The preexistent Word, who later became Jesus Christ, was sent to earth by the Father in heaven. The Gospel of John bears record to this truth many times.
"For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved" (John 3:17). Verse 34 adds, "For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God."
Jesus said, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work" (John 4:34; compare John 5:30).
But where did Christ come from? The book of John also makes this abundantly clear: "No one has ascended to heaven but He [Christ] who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who [since His ascension] is in heaven" (John 3:13). Jesus further said, "For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me" (John 6:38). And He also told people of His day: "You are from beneath [the earth]; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world" (John 8:23).
Jesus explicitly stated: "I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father" (John 16:28). Thus, Jesus was sent from the Father and returned to Him, where both now exist together in glory and majesty (John 17:5; Hebrews 8:1; 12:2).
